Critics are questioning the impact of Alberta Premier Jason Kenney's inquiry.

After Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday a $2.5-million public inquiry into foreign funding of groups campaigning against Alberta oil, critics are questioning the inquiry’s impact and intentions.

Story continues below “It isn’t being headed by a judge, it isn’t being headed by someone outside Alberta, it isn’t being headed by an independent party,” political commentator Sandy Garissino said of the inquiry headed by forensic and restructuring accountant Steve Allan. “The result will be that environmentalists take foreign money, and now we know, that’s what it’s going to say.

“This is a fool’s errand,” he said. “I don’t believe this will help Alberta further its interests in accessing pipelines and expanding our market access.”Journalist Mike De Souza said the inquiry is reminiscent of action taken by the Harper government several years ago, when Ottawa launched an elaborate communications campaign to promote Canada’s energy industry while lobbying foreign governments to eliminate international action on climate change.

“The mistake Vivian Krause and Premier Kenney make is thinking that it’s one campaign. It’s not,” Berman said in an interview last month. “It’s dozens of campaigns. If it’s anything, it’s a movement or movements.”WATCH: Premier Kenney announces details of ‘energy war room’

Is he going to ban groups like the World Wildlife Foundation or Greenpece who raise money in Canada to fight environmental issues around the world?

I remember when the media used to have a melt-down every time Trump used the term 'witch hunt'. Where is the outrage now Liberal FakeNews 'media'?

Actually, foreign funding flows to both sides of Alberta's oil sands battle - Macleans.caStephen Maher: Fear-mongering about U.S.-backed environmental groups is a symptom of strain on the oil industry. Next will come demands for government support. Maher explains that us Calgarians need to be on the watch out for those oil men on the lookout for gov money. WHAT a joke, we’ve had 3 companies try to get 3 pipelines built only to be stopped by the worlds most difficult regulations and land system. Yeah, it’d be disgusting if a Canadian industry looked for government support right? Bombardier? Auto industry? Lavalin? Mining? Fisheries? Prove it wrong, but don’t just be your usual pious, dismissive selves! I don't see how. knowing who is funding the anti oil sands movement, would be a bad thing. I suspect that a lot of the money comes from those who don't care about the environment.

Alberta launches $2.5-million inquiry into funding for environmentalists opposed to pipelinesPremier Jason Kenney argued foreign groups and billionaires have been funding Canadian organizations for years to spread misleading information as part of a widespread and co-ordinated campaign against pipelines and Alberta’s energy sector That is a fair payback for FairQuestions helping elect jkenney as Premier. cdnpoli I see it's not 'if' but 'how, when where and how much' that kenney is after. Not exactly an impartial inquiry. And funded by a member of a past federal government that went after Canadian charities. No credibility in the results whatsoever. This will not end well.
