Post readers have their say on the death of the much-loved reporter and opinion writer

Christie Blatchford, 1951 – 2020I love the National Post. I’ve always loved the National Post. I’ve been with you since Day One.Thank you for devoting so much of your paper to her. She deserved it. We’ll miss her and are all poorer for her passing.I’m stunned to learn of the death of Christie Blatchford. I learned so much whenever she spoke or wrote. She was a beacon voice for me, as she made sense of bad events in the ways in which she shared her humanity. I related to that.

As a daily reader of the Post, I would always read a Blatchford article first, and on two occasions I wrote to her in praise of the manner in which she had covered stories. I can claim of no other connection with her. That is why veterans, military and ordinary people loved her truthfulness. There are so few fearless journalists and we just lost one. RIP Christie you were a diamond.A newspaper reader couldn’t ignore Christie Blatchford’s writing. Although one might occasionally blanch at some of her opinions, so forcefully expressed, she wrote with the ring of truth, unswervingly — straight as an arrow from her heart.

Hers was the first commentary I would read as I sipped my morning coffee. I admired her insight, compassion and gutsy way of speaking truth to power. I loved how she championed the underdog, and as a wife and mother to a son, appreciated how she bucked the trend of denigrating the male species. Despite Clement’s dour depiction of heaven, I believe Christie is just the kind of person with whom Jesus would love to share a cold one!I was a young boy when I first heard the name Christie Blatchford back in the early 2000s. Where many older than I knew her as the journalist that talked to half-nude hockey players in change rooms, I only knew her from the news.

At times even my staunch opinions were brought to ruin by her words, to which I am thankful. She always spoke the truth, no matter the peril of criticism she may take. Her opinions could be strong and forceful, yet she wrote with such precision, that one had a hard time finding flaws in her argument. So many times did she make me laugh and so many times I have to thank her for backing me up.I was very sad to hear about the passing of Christie Blatchford.
