Saturday night will be an emotional one for many at Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s. That’s when the Newfoundland Growlers will debut Buddy Jr, or Buddy ...

The original Buddy the Puffin remains an institution in St. John’s sports, and the Growlers are hoping to honour that legacy and perhaps build on it a little bit.“There's definitely going to be a lot of emotions when people first see Buddy 22,” said Kenny O’Leary, the Growlers’ vice president of business operations. “To be honest with you, with our staff it hit us hard, but in a joyful way, because as soon as we seen him again, we knew we made the right decision.

During his time as Buddy, he entertained thousands at both the old Memorial Stadium and Mary Brown’s Centre. The hashtag ‘#ForAbbo’ sprung up and accompanied social media posts. Forward Todd Skirving would end every warmup with a low five, something he did with Abbott, as he left the ice at the end of the skate.
