But the National Hockey League’s announcement the San Jose Sharks will abide by a Santa Clara County ban on gatherings of more than 1,000 people likely represents the first domino to fall in terms of guaranteed lost revenue for the league.

But so much can change over the next eight days as the NHL continues to monitor the outbreak on an hour-by-hour basis. To what extent depends on how the policy is worded, which endorsements or riders are purchased and what policy limits are set. The issue for the NHL is how quickly Santa Clara County went from "recommending" avoiding mass gatherings to"banning" all mass gatherings – in a span of four days.

To date, the NHL has not asked the NHL Players’ Association to increase escrow withholding for the final three paycheques of the season, to be paid on March 15, March 30 and April 15.
