There could be something uniquely disappointing about pandemic living for those who usually try to see the sunny side of things, while pessimists may have envisioned nightmare scenarios that have not come to pass, says author Oliver Burkeman.

I am optimistic that there are major firings at CBC for fabrications and a smear campaign and that our PM goes back into permanent hiding. I'm optimistic that the truth will come to light and his supporters will open their eyes. Morale elitist who have shamed democracy.

Isn't that basic logic for all things in life. I don't think pessimism helped a lot of people...

I’m neither. I’m a science-based realist. I expected what happened to be pretty much what happened. That’s not pessimism; it’s reality. And to be honest, no that didn’t make it “easier” largely due to the “optimists” screwing things up and making them predictably worse.

It’s the Stockdale Paradox. People constantly hope that the pandemic will end next month. And that means constantly being let down. To get through this we need to have faith that it will end and also accept that it’s going to be a while before that happens.

In other words, the ongoing breakdown in civilization finally created a crisis that affected everyone, and all those naively bougie consumers faced a reality they couldn't ignore.
