With full tides running and soon to start ebbing, Goulden’s son Jody Dedrick wasted no time in contacting“All we did in the meantime was keep them wet and comfortable until somebody got there," says Goulden."There was nothing we could do. The animals are too big to move ourselves and we had hoped they would find their way back out to the open water, but they didn’t,”
When they arrived in Shelburne shortly after 2 p.m., they were taken to the island by a local community member.“Once we got on scene, we found two adult and three juvenile Atlantic white-sided dolphins,” says Reid. “There were also two other adults in the area but they didn’t strand out." "With the dropping tide and the hot day, it was important to move them quickly," Reid says."We decided to carry them over a narrow spit of beach probably about 100 metres to the other side and open ocean.”
An ATV and trailer were used to partially transport the Atlantic white-sided dolphins that became stranded on McNutts Island on Aug. 14 back to the open ocean. - Contributed"The team, DFO and the local community brought them over to one spot and we had team members holding them in the water until we got them all there," says Reid."Once we got them there, we gave them some time to get their balance back and calm down and released them.
