Around two months ago track wasn’t even on Jaleel Horton's radar. The Yarmouth teen tried it out at the urging of others. Now he's on Team Nova Scotia and heading to this month's Canada Games.

YCMHS graduate Jaleel Horton is heading to the Canada Games as part of the Team Nova Scotia athletics team. Horton only very recently started training and competing in track but he’s garnered much success – even while, he and his family laugh, as newbies to the sport they were still figuring out the best and proper footwear to get him across the finish lines.

CONTRIBUTEDAround two months ago track wasn’t even on his radar. He tried it out at the urging of others. He qualified for the Canada Games during July trials in Stellarton where he ran the final in 11:47 seconds against a headwind. During those trials he also achieved a personal best of 11:30.

“A win is a personal best,” she says. “A huge win for someone in track – whether you’re running, throwing, jumping, whatever – is you came out and you did the best that you can do.” Not only has he had to get and keep his head in the game, but he’s also had to do so under a different type of pressure that the majority of his teammates never had to deal with or even think about.

Yarmouth teen Jaleel Horton is a newbie to the sport of track, having only picked it up a couple of months ago. But not only is he thriving and seeing much success in his 100-metre sprint event, he's now heading to the Canada Games as part of Team Nova Scotia.
