Marissa Shephard, one of six women on a website connecting inmates to the community, describes herself as having ‘wisdom way beyond my years’

A woman awaiting a second trial, after her murder conviction was overturned for an “evil” incident four years ago in which a teenager was tortured and killed, is seeking pen pals as she waits in prison.

The crime Shephard stands accused of is one of particular cruelty and horror. It caused public outrage, particularly in New Brunswick. On Dec. 17, 2015, firefighters in Moncton extinguished a house fire and discovered the remains of 18-year-old Baylee Wylie inside. His death was immediately considered suspicious. While a fugitive wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, the RCMP said she had an uncanny ability to change her appearance and could be anywhere.

“The issue at trial was not whether Ms. Shephard was a good person, but whether she participated in the murder of Baylee Wylie and the arson,” the appeal decisions says. The strongest evidence seemed to be the out-of-court statements made by Morningstar to police, in which he incriminated her. Morningstar refused to testify at her trial, however. She did testify, and disputed each allegation Morningstar made against her.

Wylie joined Shephard and the two men at Shephard’s home “for some drug-fueled excitement,” the ruling says. She had known him since childhood, court heard.
