‘In Canada, similar to the U.S., the anti-Semitism we see comes from a polarized world — there’s hate on the extreme right, hate on the extreme left’

Reuven Bulka, rabbi emeritus of Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Ottawa, was driving to New York State last weekend to attend a family bar mitzvah and Hanukkah gathering when he got a text message from his daughter.

The incident was the latest in a string of verbal and physical attacks on Orthodox Jews in the U.S., including a deadly shooting last month at a kosher grocery store in Jersey City, N.J. While physical violence against Jews in Canada are not as common, hate crimes against the community have become a growing concern in recent years.

Jewish advocacy organization B’nai Brith Canada releases its own set of data every year, which includes not only police-reported incidents but those reported to the organization’s “anti-hate hotline.” Its 2019 audit showed 2,041 incidents of anti-Semitism, an increase of 16 per cent from the previous year.

“It’s a poison that changes itself to situations. In Canada, similar to the United States, the anti-Semitism we see comes from a polarized world — there’s hate on the extreme right, hate on the extreme left.” But in a recent opinion column published in University Affairs, Jeffrey Sachs, a history and politics lecturer at Acadia University, said while there was no question anti-Semitism was a serious problem, he worries the push to enforce anti-discrimination policies — and Canada’s recent adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism, which some have criticized for being overly broad — could conflate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism and threaten...

but mah victimhood

The policy seems to be that the cops protect neo-Nazis and white supremacists when they march into towns uninvited to spew their hate and actual citizens show up to say they are not welcome. We are not taking the far-right threat of violence seriously in Canada.

I wonder where all this recent anti-Semitism is coming from... ...just in these last few years, too.
