The parade has evolved a long way since it began in 1978.

Vancouver's LGBTQ+ community has been holding parades for more than four decades, and they've become one of the largest annual Pride parades in Canada, if not the world.

1. In early parades people wore paper bags over their heads to hide their identity The first Pride parades occurred when Canadian society was openly homophobic. Lee Keple, Interim Executive Director at the Vancouver Pride Society, notes that it wasn't just in Vancouver, when they went to the first Pride Parade in Edmonton in the 90s many wore bags, out of fear of being outed and fired.

They also launched the second in Canada for the queer community. Given the legal system and society's homophobia, the list of subscribers was kept in a safety deposit box. To keep the annual celebration with floats afloat, Wallace supported it, making sure it continued on. He used 50/50s and money collected though pull tab machines to keep it all going. Now the pancake breakfast bearing his name is a fundraiser itself.

This means a few things, including savings on certain aspects, more public eyes on the event's organization, and, oddly, the city has to hold a Pride parade if the Vancouver Pride Society won't for some reason .They explain that the city has deemed the event culturally important to the fabric of the city.

Lung cancer survivor, Notley slam Danielle Smith over cancer commentsAs someone living with stage four lung cancer, Dave Nitsche says Danielle Smith does not know the first thing about the disease. Let's not give this Danielle Smith creature any more media attention. She defines what's wrong with Alberta politics. Brian Jean is honest. Hard-working. A high level of integrity. I don't even want to consider the other options. Albertans shouldn't hold their breath waiting for ABDanielleSmith to apologize. She's too wrapped up in her own ego. Heartbreaking!!! I've suffered just as witness with my daughter who at 27 had C & recovered; & caregiver to hubby, (her dad), who passed a year later. I cried all day today in YYC with notice of $300 rent increase but I'll stop now. Dave Nietsche is a braver soul! My admiration.
