could safely be described as a player development organization. With four current or former farm directors overseeing an ever-expanding development staff, the Blue Jays place a high value on helping players reach their potential.

First, though, you have to find players with potential and that’s why the amateur draft matters so much. The Blue Jays could have an elite player development staff, but unless amateur scouting director Steve Sanders finds talent in the draft, there’s not much to develop. In Sanders’ first year as scouting director, he selected Logan Warmoth and Nate Pearson in the first round. Last year he went for Jordan Groshans, a high school shortstop. This year, Sanders has his highest selection yet: 11th overall.
