The ute was carrying five people when it rolled down a hill and ended up wrapped around a tree, killing a young man.
A 21-year-old man from Ashburton was killed in the crash and a 22-year-old Malvern man was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A 21-year-old woman was also airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the two other occupants, a 22-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, were not hurt in the crash.
