When newsrooms don’t take the anti-racist path, they risk damaging the community and reducing trust in media organisations. When stories involving First Nations people, Muslim Australians, African Australians or other non-white communities are told through a lens of stereotypes, fear and division, the ripple effects are significant.The “African Gangs” narrative from 2018 in Melbourne is a glaring example.
