A new report reveals widespread racism within the ABC, Australia's national broadcaster. The findings highlight a concerning power imbalance and call into question the institution's ability to hold power accountable when it struggles with its own internal issues.
ustralia prides itself on the strength of its democracy – one where a robust and independent media is a cornerstone for upholding accountability and truth. However, the findings from thehighlight a glaring reality: the public broadcaster, which should be holding power to account, is failing to adequately address a power imbalance of its own.
Why has this happened at our national broadcaster? One answer is that it is simply a reflection of Australian society at large. This is a direct consequence of structural racism – where power and privilege entrenched in laws, policies and institutions supports the dominant white culture. When newsrooms don’t take the anti-racist path, they risk damaging the community and reducing trust in media organisations. When stories involving First Nations people, Muslim Australians, African Australians or other non-white communities are told through a lens of stereotypes, fear and division, the ripple effects are significant.The “African Gangs” narrative from 2018 in Melbourne is a glaring example.
