A Pike County jury convicted Xavier Edwards of murder and illegal firearm possession Tuesday in the 2021 shooting death of Andre Thompson outside a Troy bar.
Xavier Edwards has been convicted of murder and illegal firearm possession in the 2021 shooting death of Andre Thompson . Edwards appeared in Pike County Circuit Court on Monday, May 19, for jury selection and trial, Circuit Judge Jeff Kelley presiding.
Late the next day, the jury deliberated for only about 15 minutes before returning guilty verdicts on both charges. Testimony and evidence showed Edwards and Thompson were both at a bar on Highway 231 North in Troy in the early morning hours of Oct. 23, 2021. Around 1:30 a.m., Edwards left the parking lot in his vehicle, then returned. Edwards got out of his vehicle and approached Thompson’s.
After a verbal exchange, Edwards pulled out a pistol and shot Thompson twice in the chest, then fled the scene. The whole incident was recorded by the bar’s video surveillance cameras. Edwards has multiple prior violent felony convictions, making it illegal for him to own a gun under Alabama law.
“With this jury verdict, a dangerous and violent felon will hopefully be removed from our streets and unable to harm any more innocent people,” Tarbox said. Edwards is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 10. He faces a sentence of life without the possibility of parole due to his criminal record.
