The superintendent told WBRC, this was a federally funded program that helped with learning loss during and after the pandemic.

According to the Chilton County school district superintendent, this was a federally funded program that helped with learning loss during and after the pandemic. Chilton County Superintendent Corey Clements says the after-school program was set to end this academic year and because the funds are no longer available, the school district can’t afford to continue this program.

The cost for the program was about $2.5 million a year, according to Clements. “We have about $9 million of discretionary funds so you’re looking at about 30 percent of our discretionary funds would have to be used for that and we are not able to do that. We would have to cut essential programs to be able to do it.” Superintendent Clements says as a district, there are no plans to offer any after-school programs. However Clanton Elementary School is considering their own program for the upcoming school year. “It would have to be board approved and our CSFO would have to verify its finically sustainable and it’s not something that would put our parents in a bind,” Clements says. School leaders say they need an accurate count of the families that would be willing to pay a fee for these services.Prior to requesting board of education approval, we need a tentative number of students who will attend for an $80 fee per student monthly. For a 20-day period, this would calculate to $4 per day. The cost for families with multiple children in the program will be adjusted. The school is also seeking donations and plans to host fundraising campaigns to operate the program at a cost parents can afford.
