Tanzania Signs $2.15 Billion Deal for Railway Linking Dar es Salaam to Burundi Nickel Mine

Tanzania has signed a $2.15 billion deal with two Chinese firms to construct a railway connecting its main port of Dar es Salaam to a nickel mine in Burundi. The 282-kilometer standard gauge railway line aims to facilitate the export of the critical mineral and boost cross-border trade between the two East African nations. The African Development Bank will finance the project through a concessional loan.

Mbarawa said the main purpose of the 282-kilometer Uvinza-Musongati standard gauge railway line is to facilitate export of the critical mineral and open up cross-border trade between the two East African nations.
