In December 2015, the UAE Cabinet declared 2016 as the Year of Reading. Pursuant to the declaration, the Cabinet issued directives to start preparing an integratedand a framework to produce a reading generation and establish the UAE as the capital of cultural and knowledge content.
H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE noted that reading is a basic skill for a new generation of scientists, intellectual, researchers and innovators. He stressed that the establishment of a knowledge-based economy requires nurturing a generation of readers who are fully aware of developments happening around them, as well as of the best ideas and the latest theories.
