Gloucester County Sheriff's Officers Suffer Gunshot Wounds During Training

Two Gloucester County sheriff's officers sustained graze wounds and another suffered a more serious leg wound during a firearms qualification training exercise at South Jersey Shooting Club. The incident, classified as an 'inadvertent discharge', is under administrative review by the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office.

The Gloucester County sheriff’s officers were taking part in firearms qualification training on March 29 at South Jersey Shooting Club in Winslow Township in Camden County, authorities said at the time.

following the “inadvertent discharge” of a gun, Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Tom Gilbert said soon after the incident. Two officers suffered graze wounds, while the third suffered a leg wound, according to reports and emergency dispatch audio received by NJ Advance Media last year in response to Open Public Records Act requests. “Two are graze wounds. No tourniquets are applied. Third is a little bit more than a graze wound,” an emergency responder at the scene said about the officers’ injuries in one recording. “Bleeding is controlled at this point. I have EMS arriving now.”The bullet was fired from a 9mm gun, according to the records. Because the incident occurred in Camden County, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office handled the investigation. An official there said the office’s criminal investigation was completed and the matter was referred back to the sheriff’s department for “administrative review.” The Camden prosecutor’s office denied an Open Public Records Act request from NJ Advance Media seeking information about the investigation. Because the matter was deemed non-criminal, it’s been sent back to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office for consideration of any administrative action, Gilbert said Monday. Officials with the sheriff’s office and county administration department did not immediately respond to questions about whether any employees faced administrative penalties over the incident.
