The series creator explained how, despite the Duffer Brothers having involvement in both TV shows, and despite the supernatural elements found in both, they are entirely different stories from one another. He uses a playground analogy to explain what the differences between the two shows are, and how The Boroughs is building its own world entirely separate from that of the other series. I know there's some theories out there that we're a thing. We're not. Matt and Ross and all of them who make Stranger Things, that's Stranger Things. We're not playing in their playground.

They have an awesome playground, but we're building over here. There are some similarities between Stranger Things and the world of The Boroughs, though they're not anything concrete enough to say the two are part of a shared universe. The entity the characters in the newer show face is far-removed from the Upside Down or the Abyss, while Stranger Things' story is more concentrated in a singular location than it is the entire world for much of its runtime.

Although the two shows have similar structures, with a group of characters solving a dangerous supernatural mystery, they don't share the same universe. Because of this, it allows The Boroughs to breathe on its own, despite also having the Duffer Brothers involved in its production. The show doesn't need to rely on the existence of other series to tell its own story, with no direct connections to anything else.

This allows its eight-episode storyline to play out exactly as it needs to. Based on Addiss' statement, the show stands on its own for a reason, as it's building its own"playground" of sorts for its characters to interact in. The Stranger Things universe is also expanding in more direct ways, such as the ongoing animated series Stranger Things: Tales from '85, which takes place between seasons 2 and 3 of the original series.

In addition, a live-action Stranger Things spinoff is also in development, with direct connections to the main show also expected to crop up. This expansion further clarifies The Boroughs doesn't take place in the same world, with the two building out their stories in very different ways. This confirmation also allows The Boroughs to play with its supernatural elements more readily, as the show gets to make its own rules removed from the expectations of the Duffer Brothers' other series.

Even though their involvement means comparisons to Stranger Things are going to be inevitable, the series has its own identity that it clarifies and runs with, thus making it a very different, standalone experience.
