Police closed the Irwindale onramp about 1:23 a.m. as firefighters worked on the burning trailer. Produce was scattered across lanes, and the CHP requested that Caltrans assist with cleanup.

A semi’s produce-laden trailer caught fire early Thursday morning on the 210 Freeway in Irwindale, prompting authorities to issue a SigAlert that extended into the early hours of the morning commute.

The fire was reported about 1:10 a.m. on the eastbound 210 near Irwindale Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. Police closed the Irwindale onramp to the 210 East about 1:23 a.m. as firefighters worked on the burning trailer. The driver of the big rig was able to disconnect the truck and the trailer, containing the fire to that trailer and sparing the tractor from the flames, said the CHP.

A tow company was called to the scene to remove the burned trailer, but the job was made difficult because all of the container’s tires were destroyed in the fire.CHP officers requested a “hard closure” of the No. 3 and 4 lanes of the east 210 and the Irwindale onramp so produce could be removed from the burned trailer.

The SigAlert was declared at 1:55 a.m. and was initially slated to last two hours. At 3:28 a.m., the SigAlert was extended until 5 a.m.
