This long pursuit finally came to an end in November 2024, when authorities tracked Daniel Andreas San Diego to a secluded bungalow in the quiet Welsh hamlet of Maenan, near Llanrwst. San Diego, now 46 years old, had spent twenty-one years as a fugitive, fleeing the United States after being accused of orchestrating a series of violent attacks.
His capture marks the conclusion of a massive international manhunt that spanned continents and decades, ending in the serene landscape of North Wales. The operation involved a coordinated effort between the National Crime Agency and the North Wales Police to secure the suspect. The charges against San Diego stem from a period of militant animal rights activism in the early 2000s.
He is accused of planting three nail bombs across California between 2003 and 2004, specifically targeting corporations that were linked to animal testing. These attacks were associated with a radical group known as the Animal Liberation Brigade, which claimed responsibility for the explosions. The first two targets were the Chiron biotechnology corporation in Emeryville, followed by an attack on the Shaklee Corporation in Pleasanton.
These bombs were designed with nails to act as shrapnel, increasing the potential for injury, although fortunately, no one was harmed in the blasts. Because of these actions, the FBI classified him as a domestic terrorist and a dangerous individual, marking him as the first domestic terror suspect to be placed on their elite Most Wanted list. To avoid detection, San Diego utilized his technical expertise to disappear and relocate. He eventually settled in the United Kingdom, where he adopted the alias Danny Webb. Under this false identity, he presented himself to his neighbors as an IT professional who had been born in Ireland. In 2023, he purchased a modest three-bedroom bungalow situated on an isolated hillside in North Wales.
This specific property provided the perfect sanctuary for a man in hiding, as it was accessible only via a single-track lane and a steep dirt road, far removed from the prying eyes of the public. The home offered a strategic vantage point overlooking the Conwy Valley and the A470, the only main road leading into the hamlet.
The former owner of the property noted that the isolated nature of the home made it an ideal spot for anyone wishing to keep their head down, and San Diego had even paid above the asking price to secure the residence, citing an interest in the surrounding woodland for mountain biking. Following his arrest, San Diego was transported to HMP Belmarsh in London, where he is currently being held.
He is facing extradition proceedings to return to the United States to answer for the crimes he is alleged to have committed over twenty years ago. Meanwhile, the minimalist bungalow that served as his final hideout has been put up for auction with a guide price of 300,000 pounds.
