You’ve heard of Joint Base San Antonio, but what does it do? In supplying three major military installations, it’s got a mammoth job
It's a support organization for three big military installations — Randolph Air Force Base, Lackland AFB and the Army's Fort Sam Houston — as well as Camp Bullis, an Army training range in northwest Bexar County.JBSA grew out of the consolidation of U.S. military bases after the end of the Cold War. It is one of a dozen joint bases, and it's the largest. Here's a primer.Let's start with what it doesn't do. JBSA doesn't command troops or direct military operations.
Among its responsibilities, JBSA makes sure base personnel have safe living conditions. In 2019, JBSA’s commander,after workers discovered mold. A variety of Air Force, Army and Navy commands have headquarters within JBSA. For example, Randolph is the home base of the Air Education and Training Command, which oversees all Air Force instruction from boot camp to fighter pilot training.
Randolph was carved out of San Antonio’s Northeast Side during the Depression to act as a hub for early flight training.
