Columnist Leslie Kouba says you'd have to be bananas to go to the polls Nov. 7 without understanding every issue on the ballot.CLEVELAND, Ohio – There are 1,000 kinds of bananas. A thousand! I had no idea. About 50% of them are edible, including our classic yellow Cavendish, but not all nanners are yellow. Some are red, others are blue. They don’t all taste like banana-as-we-know-it, either – there’s apple, honey or vanilla ice cream flavor bananas.

Since early voting starts this Tuesday, Oct. 11, we’re running short on getting up to speed on the life-changing issues on the upcoming Nov. 7 ballot. Ohio’s petition-initiated amendment relies on the expertise of obstetricians to determine best outcomes for their patients if a pregnancy is beyond the point of viability. Hopefully, all pregnant individuals will have access to good doctors, who will support their mental, emotional and physical health – but that’s a whole ‘nuther nanner we’ll peel another time.

In the shadow of Issue 1, Issue 2 seems small. Legalizing recreational cannabis use could provide some societal benefits, such as better use of our safety and law enforcement officers’ time. Proponents point to Ohio’s regulation of alcohol and tobacco as the model to follow for marijuana, and since those are statistically more harmful than cannabis, it’s time.
