Gil Birmingham, who played Rainwater, discusses the emotional impact of the finale and the character's journey.
Yellowstone has concluded its run with a significant finale, seeing the Dutton Ranch transferred to the Broken Rock Reservation . This sale not only addressed the family's long-standing financial struggles but also fulfilled a promise dating back to 1883, the prequel series that highlighted the Duttons' arrival in Montana. For Gil Birmingham, who played Thomas Rainwater , the Chairman of the Broken Rock Reservation , the ending represented more than just a storyline development.
It signified a triumph for his character, whose journey encompassed the entire series. In a conversation with Collider following the finale, Birmingham disclosed his initial awareness of Rainwater's crucial role in the conclusion and the profound impact it had on him. He shared, 'Taylor, from the very beginning, had penned the Yellowstone bible. He knew how it was going to end. Of course, you never know what the journey is going to be and how you get there, but perhaps around Season 3 or 4, he indicated that there was going to be a transference of land. Of course, I was sworn to secrecy, but I didn't know the manner in which it was going to be written.' Even with prior knowledge of the general outcome, Birmingham was deeply moved upon reading the finale's script. 'It was so overwhelming. Even when I read it, I was in tears. Then, when we filmed it, I was equally in tears in terms of what Thomas Rainwater was feeling,' he stated. 'It was really a spiritual moment.' In the series' final episode, Rainwater's acquisition of the ranch was portrayed as a moment of reconciliation and respect. Contrary to his earlier declaration to John Dutton (Kevin Costner) that he would buy the ranch after John's death, Rainwater's intentions evolved over time. Initially a threat, it transformed into a pledge. As Birmingham explained, 'It wasn't to disparage or to remove legacy,'
