McMahon, who retired last year amid a misconduct probe, has named himself and two former executives to the WWE board.
“WWE is entering a critical juncture in its history with the upcoming media rights negotiations coinciding with increased industry-wide demand for quality content and live events and with more companies seeking to own the intellectual property on their platforms,” said McMahon in a statement Thursday night.
The board coup d’état comes as the WWE is said to already be pursuing strategic options, including the possibility of a sale. McMahon wants to lead any talks about a possible sale or rights negotiations himself, he said in his statement.
