The Philippines is increasing cooperation with the U.S. and developing stronger mechanisms to defuse disputes with China as it walks a fine line between the two superpowers, President Marcos said
“We are on the front line,” said Mr. Marcos, noting that 150,000 Filipino nationals live in Taiwan and that the southern Taiwanese port city of Kaohsiung is 40 minutes away from the northern Philippines. “We’re very much there, and that’s why we have to be terribly, terribly careful.”
“They’ve fished there for 20 to 30 generations and they simply cannot understand why they can no longer fish there,” Mr. Marcos said. “I said, ‘Mr. President, there’s no need for any of this, because we have no interest in your rocket part. If you would like, we would pick it up and bring it to you,’” Mr. Marcos said.
Mr. Marcos voiced concern that mistakes or misunderstandings in the South China Sea could “ignite something that is much larger and much worse than it is already now.” He proposed to Mr. Xi, he said, that an existing bilateral team responsible for tackling South China Sea incidents be upgraded to include senior officials on both sides with direct access to the countries’ respective presidents to ensure problems don’t escalate.
