Oceanic researchers found the World War II-era submarine “relatively intact” thousands of feet below the South China Sea.The wreckage of a storied U.S. Navy submarine, which sank the most Japanese warships during World War II under the stewardship of a famed Dallas-born naval commander, has been found more than 3,000 feet below the South China Sea.

Memorial Day is a time to remember all who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and all who bravely fought alongside them“Harder was lost in the course of victory. We must not forget that victory has a price, as does freedom,” said NHHC director Samuel Cox, a retired Navy rear admiral, in a news release announcing the discovery.

A 4D photogrammetry model captured by the Lost 52 Project shows USS Harder wreck site. The organization scanned the entire boat and stitched all the images together in a multidimensional model of the site. Dealey was the Harder’s first and only commander.before entering the United States Naval Academy. He graduated in 1930 and served on various battleships, destroyers and submarines before taking command of Harder in December 1942.

The “excellent state of preservation of the site” and the data collected by Taylor allowed the NHHC to confirm the wreck was Harder. The vessel, which weighs more than 1,500 tons, sits upright on her keel and is “relatively intact” except for the depth charge damage aft of the submarine’s conning tower, according to the command.
