Biden’s campaign has rejected the calls for him to step down and said one performance does not define his ability to lead the country. Among the questions is how much impact a debate is going to have on the voting decisions of Americans in a race between two of the most well-known and established candidates in memory. Opinions on both men are also hardened among most of the electorate, raising questions about what a single debate performance will do to the dynamics of the race.
The party’s leaders have rallied around the president publicly while acknowledging he had a poor performance in the days since the debate. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C. and close ally of Biden, said voters should take Biden’s record into account instead of basing their vote on one night and that the president shouldn’t step aside.
“Let us not make a judgment about a presidency on one debate. Let's talk about what it means to people in their lives. And that is why you are not seeing much change in the polls on this. The difference between Joe Biden and the former president is so clear,” Pelosi said on “State of the Union.”
