On Monday, the Worthington School Board unanimously voted to rescind its policy allowing students to leave during the school day for religious instruction.
Only 18 to 21 students at one school in the Worthington district used the policy this year, a board member said in November. Over 50 students at another school used it last year, but not this year.
The board decided to end the practice by a 4-0 vote. The school board president was absent from the meeting. Some board members commented that they don't believe children should leave school during the day and wondered if the religious programs could be held after school hours or at the school, space permitting.
The board voted unanimously but amended the rescission to take effect after December 31, 2024. Westerville Schools voted to rescind a similar policy in September. There is a bill at the statehouse that could mandate those policies be available to students. If that passes, the Worthington board said it would create a new policy to comply.
