Right now, women make up only 5% of the welding industry. But that's something Alvin Community College is hoping to change.

Alvin Community College is seeing more and more women signing up to be a part of their welding program.It may be a male-dominated field, but Alvin Community College is seeing more and more women signing up to be a part of their welding program.

The two-year curriculum requires more than 1,500 hours of contact welding theory and hands-on training, aimed at giving students a well-rounded set of skills to help them enter the workforce in entry-level positions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 5.1% of those working as welders in 2022 were women.

ACC's welding technology program launched only two years ago and will celebrate its first graduating class of eight in May. Bedwell will be the very first woman to complete the certification and plans on pursuing a career as a rig welder.
