A new study reveals that women, particularly those in middle age, have a greater risk of developing long COVID compared to men. Researchers suggest several possible explanations, including hormonal differences and a higher prevalence of comorbidities like myalgic encephalomyelitis and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome in women.

“Long COVID is an infection-associated chronic condition that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and is present for at least 3 months as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that affects one or more organ systems,” the report said. Male participants reported “more severe acute COVID-19 and higher mortality than females,” researchers found, but women were more likely to have long-term “sequelae” or consequences from a previous infection.“Overall, female sex was associated with a 1.31-times higher risk of long COVID,” researchers said. “In age-stratified analyses, female sex was associated with the highest risk of long COVID among adults aged 40 to 54 years followed by those aged 55 years or older.
