Heather Cupano, 36, of Monroe, brought the infant to the hospital on August 25 and reported that she had ingested heroin, officials said.

A woman has been charged in the death of her infant daughter who succumbed to her injuries two weeks after ingesting fentanyl, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said.

Heather Cupano, 36, of Monroe, brought the 11-month-old to St. Peter’s University Hospital on August 25 and reported that the child had ingested heroin, officials said. Cupano was arrested the next day and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after the infant tested positive for fentanyl, authorities said.

Prosecutors also allege that the mother administered a Narcan on her own when the child exhibited signs of an overdose and then waited more than 48 hours before seeking medical treatment. A Narcan revival is a temporary remedy for a victim of a suspected opioid overdose, but does not prevent an overdose death, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. Following the administering of a Narcan, medical attention is necessary, the office said. The infant succumbed to her injuries on September 8, authorities said. One day later, Cupano was charged with aggravated manslaughter and witness tampering.

At a detention hearing on Tuesday, a judge ordered her to be detained pre-trial. Her next court date is scheduled for October 17.
