the 2024 WNBA Draft at Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 15, 2024 in New York City. The WNBA announced Monday that the expansion draft for the Golden State Valkyries, the league’s 13th team, will be held on Dec. 6 and will air on ESPN.
In addition to announcing the date, the WNBA revealed new details about how the expansion draft will work. Existing teams will submit roster lists, which include all players the team has the rights to as of the end of the 2024 regular season. From there, teams can create protected lists of up to six players. The rest will be exposed for the Valkyries to select. As each team has a roster of 12 players, some tough decisions are looming.
Teams must note which players on their roster lists are unrestricted free agents regardless of whether they are on the protected list. The Valkyries will only be allowed to choose one player in the league set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024 season.
The league did not announce the exact day the roster lists are due, but it “is expected to be approximately 10 days prior to the date of the expansion draft.”
