Western State College of Law’s parent organization is currently in financial turmoil.

It took several weeks of not receiving the financial-aid money she’s owed, rumors her law school was teetering on the edge of closure and few answers about how these challenges would affect her classmates before Marina Awed took action.

If her school collapses, it could put their plans of sitting for the bar later this year in jeopardy. For students who are further behind in their legal education, it could mean facing a new start elsewhere. Awed’s motion is the first filing from an Argosy student actually affected by the lost stipends and her school’s student government is sponsoring her trip to Ohio, where the legal battle is playing out, to attend a status conference this week.

In addition, the students have put their legal education to use, Krueger said, including by closely following the legal action surrounding WSCL’s parent company and looking for any avenues they can take to get involved. Demis Camacho worries that the school’s ownership challenges could get in the way of his dream of becoming an immigration attorney. Camacho said he first became aware that the school was having financial challenges in mid-January when students began not receiving the stipends that pay for their living expenses. At that point, “we were just thinking: how are we going to pay our rent? how are we going to pay for our groceries? how are we going to pay for gas — it’s a commuter law school.

A school with a ‘checkered history’ has trained many of Orange County’s lawyers Camacho chose WSCL based on the scholarships the school was able to offer him. Given WSCL’s roughly 50-year history of supplying Orange County, California with many of the lawyers in its state attorney’s office, public defender’s office and even the judiciary, he had little reason to believe the school would wind up in such dire circumstances.

These changes came amid a backdrop of challenges in legal education, in particular at for-profit and less selective law schools. Over the past several years, organizations like Law School Transparency have raised questions about whether law schools were being honest with potential students when they advertised job placement rates.
