San Diego State could turn to a handful of still-available transfers, including one who played in the Mountain West Conference last season
who was linked to the Aztecs in Nelly Junior Joseph — a 6-10 transfer from Iona via Nigeria who averaged 14.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game while being named first team all-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
There might be 150,000 reasons. Junior Joseph is said to have been offered $150,000 in name, image and likeness payments to attend New Mexico, a figure the Aztecs can’t match and, to hear, wouldn’t even if they could for fear of unbalancing team chemistry with some players making more than others. SDSU scholarship players all receive the same NIL payments from the MESA Foundation, about $2,000 per month, in exchange for participation in periodic community service projects.
DeLoach certainly looks the part of past Aztecs posts : long, athletic, mobile, with active feet enabling him to switch the 1-5 ball screen and cover a point guard — an integral facet of their defensive scheme. He started 32 games for a 27-8 VCU team that won the Atlantic 10 and reached the NCAA Tournament, averaging 9.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in just 24.5 minutes.
Another promising stat: He ranked in the top 50 nationally in offensive rebounding rate, higher than both LeDee and Mensah.DeLoach has narrowed his list to six finalists: SDSU, Indiana, Penn State, Florida State, Miami and VCU. He is visiting Indiana first , then Penn State, SDSU and Florida State. He hopes to announce a decision by late April or early May.
