A winter storm is set to bring snow, ice, and rain to New York City and the Tri-State area on Thursday, making travel treacherous. The storm will transition from snow to sleet and freezing rain before finally becoming all rain. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution.

Motorists in New York City and the Tri-State area are facing treacherous travel conditions Thursday morning as a winter storm ushers in snow, ice, and rain. The precipitation will begin as snow, gradually transitioning to sleet and freezing rain before finally settling into all rain as warmer air moves in. Snowfall accumulations are predicted to range from a light coating to 2 inches in New York City , with up to 4 inches possible in areas north and west, particularly at higher elevations.

Adding to the hazardous driving conditions, some regions could experience around a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. In anticipation of the storm, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has taken proactive measures. On Wednesday, they treated both car and bike lanes with brine and are prepared to initiate salt operations early Thursday morning. Over 700 salt spreaders are fully stocked and ready to be deployed. The combination of brine and salt is intended to minimize both snow accumulation and ice formation. Thankfully, there are no anticipated disruptions to collection schedules. New Yorkers are advised to adhere to their regular trash, recycling, and compost collection routines unless otherwise notified. New Jersey has implemented a commercial vehicle travel restriction on several Interstate highways starting at midnight Thursday. This restriction will remain in effect until further notice and applies to tractor trailers, empty straight CDL-weighted trucks, passenger vehicles towing trailers, recreational vehicles, and motorcycles. The affected highways include I-78, I-80, I-280, I-287 in both directions for their entire lengths, and NJ Route 440 from the Outerbridge Crossing to I-287. Additionally, all motorists in New Jersey are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel Thursday morning. The storm is expected to clear the area by early afternoon, leaving roads wet for the evening commute, although icy patches will persist well north and west of the city.
