Willis won the Class 6A Texas State Lineman Challenge this past Saturday in Abilene.
Submitted PhotoOffensive and defensive lineman might not always get the same notoriety, recognition and glory on Friday nights as the guys slinging passes, rushing up the middle for touchdowns or catching a nice fade in the back of the end zone.
Willis has 12 members of the team contribute to major success in the 12-event Olympic style competition that highlights offensive linemen, defensive linemen and the occasional linebacker mixed in. Willis took first place in the Farmer’s Walk, Bench Press, Truck Push and Bobsled. It capped the day with a win in the ultimate test of team strength, the Tug of War.Members of the state champion Willis Wildkats team were Mason Isbell, Caleb Fletcher, Wyatt Johnston, Day’Jon Moore, Logan Hilton, Javon Kindle, Christian Hall, Isaac Stafford, Zach Lang, Jakayden Thompson, Frankie Long, and Brai’sean Brown.
Fitzgerald has hosted the ‘War Zone Challenge’ as a state-qualifying tournament for years, bringing it with him to his coaching stops, which most recently were Oak Ridge and Spring before coming to Willis when Trent Miller was hired as head coach in 2022.
