In the new fantasy epic 'Dune,' leading man Timothée Chalamet has a wardrobe as vast as the desert planet he traverses. How to steal his sci-fi style—because believe it or not, you’ll want to.

been back to the movies yet, now might be the time: The long-awaited, thrice-delayed Denis Villeneuve adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal 1965 novel “Dune” will hit theaters on Oct. 22. The futuristic epic stars Timothée Chalamet doing what he does best: playing an angsty teen, in this case Paul Atreides, on an archetypal hero’s journey to save us all. And much like the real-life Mr. Chalamet, his character is nothing short of a fashion plate.

For some, this future-leaning way of dressing—from romantic, hard-edged suiting to dusty tonal outfits—is already here. Sure, some of the film’s style elements are best left to cosplayers, but others will add some elegant spice to your everyday outfit. Here, four “Dune” trends that modern Earthlings can plausibly integrate into their wardrobes.

New York data analyst Michael Smith, 27, is a Rick Owens collector and has long favored similar silhouettes. “It’s flattering on pretty much anyone,” he said. A long suit jacket is a “cooler, fresher” play on proportions, agreed New York stylist Matthew Mazur. “It’s about [separating] yourself from everyone else.” A key tip: Avoid black, lest you look like an undertaker. That’s why the costume designers opted for that emerald shade—it was just enough color to tone down the tailoring’s intensity.

While the average urbanite can probably just carry a S’well bottle, lately we’ve seen a shift toward utilitarian garb. Tech consultant Drew Cardelia, 25, relies on Gore-Tex, moisture-wicking and antimicrobial fabrics to support his lifestyle as a New Yorker who commutes outdoors without a car. He favors brands like Arc’teryx, Snow Peak, Post Archive Faction and Veilance. “I’ve invested an uncomfortable amount of money in remaining moisture-wicked,” he said.
