Machines driven by AI - such as robots, chatbots, and digital assistants - are becoming increasingly human-like in their interactions with us paid intel

achines driven by artificial intelligence —such as robots, chatbots, and digital assistants—are becoming increasingly human-like in their interactions with us. This is usually by design: We get more out of our partnerships with machines if we can relate to them.

We certainly don’t need to worry about the chatbot getting offended or hurt. But even though the machines can’t feel, we tend to subconsciously treat some robots and AI systems like living things. I’m not worried about people being impolite to a chatbot, but I work with physical robots and some of the research in human-robot interaction indicates that our hesitation to harm a lifelike robot might reflect a general tendency for empathy.

We want humans to respect machines and treat them well—up to a point. It can be anything from inefficient to dangerous if our relationships with machines prevent us from doing our jobs properly. What if soldiers became so emotionally attached to autonomous robots that they didn’t want to send them out to destroy landmines? It may sound silly, but Julie Carpenter’s research shows that soldiers already treat some of the robots they work with like their pets.
