Why Supra super fans are wary of the partnership between BMW and Toyota:

Message boards and comments sections have been alive with snarky comments criticizing Toyota Motor Corp.’s new Supra sports coupe, which journalists are reviewing and will arrive at dealers this summer.

In reality, according to Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer, the 2020 Supra is the culmination of a nearly eight-year-old, highly successful collaboration between two automakers determined to create cars that share some characteristics but are quite different. BMW, meanwhile, was eager to develop a new roadster that could compete with Porsche Boxter. To do so with Toyota meant the two automakers had to create a platform that could accommodate BMW’s roadster and Toyota’s sports coupe. Once engineers from the two companies agreed on platform, the two automakers’ designs unfolded separately.
