Emperor Palpatine should have known Darth Vader would betray him in Return of the Jedi, but he was blinded by his arrogance and ignorance.
Palpatine couldn’t predict Darth Vader’s betrayal in Return of the Jedi for one simple, yet very powerful reason. One of Star Wars’ most pivotal moments, Darth Vader saving his son out of love changed the galaxy forever and solidified redemption and forgiveness as two of the most important aspects of Star Wars’ thematic storytelling. Luke Skywalker’s entire life had been building to that moment – the chance to connect with his father and help in destroying the Sith.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Every piece of Star Wars media that has been made since Return of the Jedi, from the Star Wars prequel trilogy to animated shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Bad Batch has proven time and again that Palpatine was always ten steps ahead of everybody else, anticipating every possible scenario. Return of the Jedi, however, proved that Palpatine had a significant blind spot.
But if the power of love is enough to make someone like Anakin fall to the dark side, the power of love can also be enough to turn someone to the light, as demonstrated by Vader’s turn in Return of the Jedi. Love is a force through which to find strength and determination. Anakin, above all, loved deeply and feared losing those he cared about.
Anakin Was Always Caught Between The Dark And The Light Anakin often struggled with the pull to the dark side, even when firmly affiliated with the light. Anakin’s slaughtering of the Tusken Raiders in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, for instance, was an act born solely out of revenge, hatred, and grief, and yet it wasn’t the moment that he truly turned.
Given Darth Vader’s sacrifice to save Luke, however, it can be surmised that the capability to come back to the light was always simmering behind the mask, as well, even after he himself thought he was a lost cause. Vader’s confessing that Luke is his son and that they could rule the galaxy together speaks to the person Anakin used to be – the one desperate for connection and love.
