Immortan Joe’s fatal decision to trust Furiosa winds up being his undoing, as the comics reveal that Furiosa is the only one who can stand up to Joe’s terrifying son, the giant Rictus Erectus.
Joe realizes he has a potential problem on his hands with his most feared son, as there aren’t many in his army who can stand up to Rictus. Thus, Joe is forced by circumstances to place Furiosa as his wives' bodyguard, as she is really the only one of his warriors who can take Rictus in a fight. Furiosa’s Strength Inspires Immortan Joe’s Wives to Break Free Furiosa is cold to her charges at first, standing by and doing nothing while Immortan Joe abuses and degrades them. Capable is the first one to call out Furiosa: “If you’re supposed to be protecting us,” Capable says, “why don’t you protect us from him?” It’s a moment that seems to resonate with Immortan Joe’s hardened Imperator, as she warms to the five captive women in the following scenes of the comic.
Was Furiosa One of Immortan Joe’s Wives Before Mad Max: Fury Road? In an interesting moment, Furiosa is even hinted to have been one of Joe’s previous wives, adding further layers of depth and complexity to the character. Considering that Furiosa was forcibly taken from her homeland and later became enslaved herself, she understands the plight of Joe’s unwilling brides all too well.
