Jann Mardenborough wasn't the first graduate.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While Gran Turismo makes it seem like Jann Mardenborough was the first winner of GT Academy, it was actually someone else. The new racing film from PlayStation Productions describes itself as being "based on a true story," but like many films inspired by real life events, Gran Turismo takes its creative liberties.

The two storylines align at the perfect time, as Jann Mardenborough , the gamer that no one believes in, stumbles upon an invitation to compete in a race to join the GT Academy. Mardenborough, of course, wins the race, and is subsequently able to follow his dreams. The film follows a Rocky-like underdog story, of a normal person given the opportunity to compete with professional athletes.

Lucas Ordóñez and Jann Mardenborough competed on the same team on multiple occasions, which is loosely represented in the film by the use of fictional GT Academy racers that race in Le Mans with Jann. In the 2012 Dubai 24 Hours event, the Nissan GT Academy sported a lineup of their first four academy winners, which included Lucas Ordóñez, Jann Mardenborough, Bryan Heitkotter and Jordan Tresson.

Not only was Jack Salter not real, the film's antagonist, Nicholas Capa, as well as the other GT Academy racers, are also completely made up. The creation of these characters helps build the "dream come true" narrative of the film, as Jann Mardenborough is supported by the perfect mentor whose past perfectly aligns with Mardenborough's future, and he also faces off against a comically evil racer in a climactic race that goes down to the final second.

How Many Drivers Graduated From GT Academy In Real Life In real life, the GT Academy ran from 2008-2016. In its first few years, the academy only saw a couple of graduates. As the program gained more success in the racing world, with gamers finding themselves standing on podiums, the Academy grew and began to produce more winners.
