Here’s what we know about masks and the signs to look for that indicate when we might be able to stop wearing them

Someone else who is in the vicinity of an infected person can become infected, because our lungs act like vacuums, sucking in the surrounding air at an average rate of 5-8 liters per minute. At that rate, any infectious particles in the air around us get pulled into our air passages, including the nose, mouth, back of our throat , down our windpipes and into the lungs. Particles floating in the air deposit at different places along the air passages, depending on their size.
The same is true in public health. We cannot vaccinate our way solely out of the pandemic, especially when a substantial population in the United States and the world is not fully vaccinated or even vaccinated at all. We need to tie vaccines with other public health measuresto thwart the virus: masks, reducing contact with others, rapid diagnostics, and quarantine or isolation of the exposed or ill.
There is no number of cases of Covid that I can point to that would define when Covid will make the transition from beingInstead, I believe the change to an endemic disease will be dictated by when theof Covid declines to a lower level.
Despite derision of masks in some communities, I believe they have reached a certain level of acceptance in many parts of the country. When the time comes for us to remove them from general use, there may still be reasons to put them back on. One time might be when someone has a cold or other respiratory illness, but they still have to go to work or interface with the public otherwise. Asian countries adopted this practice long ago. The other time might be when using public transportation.
