It’s also very important to remember that range estimates are just that — estimates — and there are many factors that contribute to range. Rider weight, cargo carrying, hillier or rougher terrain and outside temperature all affect range, so keep that in mind when planning out how far you need your e-bike to go. If you’ll be towing a child trailer up a big hill with your e-bike, you can expect your range to be lower than advertised.
Of course, you’ve also got the question of if a bike is UL-certified. Cheap e-bikes are typically not UL-certified, which can pose a considerable fire risk. It’s also worth mentioning that in Ontario helmets are mandatory for all e-bike riders, regardless of age. Almost all e-bikes will come with warranties on the electronic assist system, the parts on the bike itself, and the frame.
