Alabama's Nick Saban has had much to say in recent weeks and years about motivating the modern player, the value of “high achievement motivation, low anxiety,' and finding self-esteem not based in what other people are saying on the internet or TV.
last week, Saban acknowledged he even has “anxiety” before games, although he said it goes away during them.
“That’s a good question, and if we had the secret for that recipe, we’d all be better off, I think,” he said. “So there’s so many things these young people can get attached to. I think it affects their ability to have goals and aspirations of their own and to get self-esteem from themselves in terms of what they accomplish and what they do. So the whole concept of getting them to be the best they can be is almost foreign to them, because they’re wanting to be the best in terms of what somebody else might think, not what they think of themselves. I think that’s really important.
It is not the first time Saban has dissected how he feels modern players have changed psychologically.
