Ohio State was ranked No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2023 season.
For the second time in the playoff era, Ohio State is ranked No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings.College Football Playoff resume was set the moment it walked away from a game against Penn State with a win. Beating Wisconsin was more about making sure it didn’t put a dent in that.
That ranking is more of a formality given the other teams among the top four and even those ranking fifth and sixth . But it established a tone for how this committee would make decisions every week, especially in those final and most important rankings on Dec. 3. The Wolverines have dominated every team they’ve played winning by an average margin of 34.75 points. That includes a 49-0 win over Michigan State before heading to an off week. But that dominance hasn’t come against much of anything. Meanwhile, Ohio State has wins over two teams ranked inside the top 15 of the playoff rankings — No. 11 Penn State and No. 15 Notre Dame — with one of those coming on the road.
