Someone affixed a blanket of garments outside the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
For months this summer, neatly pressed parkas and shirts were affixed to the sidewalks outside the National Museum of Women in the Arts. There was no explanation as to who put them there or why. It’s gone now, but for much of this year you could see one of Washington’s weirdest works of art at the intersection of 13th Street and New York Avenue NW. At least, I think it was a work of art.
I think it was in the spring when I first noticed the shirts and coats. At the time, the museum was in the midst of its renovation . Tunnels of scaffolding protected pedestrians who walked past the front entrance on 13th Street and along the New York Avenue side. The jackets were then riveted or screwed to a wooden backing. I’m not sure whether the wooden base was part of the scaffolding arrangement — on building sites you sometimes see wooden flooring that has that abrasive, nonslip covering on it — or whether the mystery artist had put it down. The result was a tight and colorful blanket of jackets, a mosaic of Adidas and Nike outwear. If there was an artist’s statement nearby, I couldn’t find it.
