Last week, the peerless, prize-winning artist Simone Leigh hosted a conference, titled “Loophole of Retreat,” inviting Black femme arts professionals to the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, Italy. At what would be the close of their presentation, rather than closing, Onabanjo involved a powerful message: “We resist here the sense of start and finish often intimated by constructed narratives. Mimicking the manner of the photographic we remain open and moving.” This gathering and the ideas put forth are so much more open and in motion than any trite summation or conclusion could offer.
