President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are set to square off on the debate stage in an unprecedented election matchup. The first general election debate of the 2024 election season is here, and it's a historic moment no matter what happens on stage. “The debates are high stake for the simple fact that it’s going to be a very close election,” University of Washington Professor Aseem Prakash told KOMO News. “The real fight is about the independent voter.
“Inflation has impacted the family for the gas, for the groceries, for the rent,” said voter Davinderjit Singh. People want to know more about the candidates' policies on immigration. It’s a topic KOMO News has covered extensively as Washington cities and counties are unable to afford long-term housing for the hundreds of asylum seekers wanting a better life here as they await work permits.
There were also mentions of abortion access, climate change, and crime but Seattle University Professor Patrick Schoettmer said they might also be looking for something more.
